Industry leaders like Warner Bros’ Jeff Goldstein have voiced concern over the increasing costs of production and marketing, which are making studios more selective about the projects they greenlight. This trend is not unique to the US—New Zealand is feeling it too.

New Zealand Film Commission chief executive Annie Murray acknowledges the challenges, stating that inflation has touched every part of the economy, including the screen industry. The Film Commission is responding by taking a more strategic approach: fewer projects, but greater investment per title. This “fewer and bigger” mindset mirrors what’s happening in Hollywood, where studios are prioritising quality and global impact.

This shift has real implications for the way stories are told and who gets to tell them. According to Murray, this incentive drives over $1.5 billion in qualifying production expenditure each year. “For every $100 that Disney or Universal spend in New Zealand, they get $20 back. We get $80 spent in our economy that we would not get otherwise,” she explains. It’s a win-win that keeps New Zealand competitive with other production hubs like Australia, Canada, the UK, and Europe.
