New Zealand film Tina has opened to local and international success

New Zealand’s film industry is celebrating a major success with the release of Tina, a powerful and heartwarming drama that has resonated deeply with audiences across Aotearoa and beyond. Opening to an incredible $1.3 million at the box office, Tina has quickly cemented itself as one of New Zealand’s top-performing local films.

Directed, written, and produced by Miki Magasiva, Tina tells the story of Mareta Percival, a Samoan teacher navigating grief after losing her daughter in the Christchurch earthquakes. Taking on a substitute teaching role at an elite private school, she finds students who need guidance, inspiration, and love. This compelling narrative, combined with a stellar cast, has made Tinā a must-see film.

Among the talented ensemble cast is Talia Pua, one of Collaborate Management’s rising stars. Talia’s performance adds depth and authenticity to the film, contributing to its emotional impact and strong audience connection. She joins an impressive lineup that includes Anapela Polataivao in the lead role, alongside Beulah Koale, Nicole Whippy, and newcomer Antonia Robinson.

Tina has also made history as the widest release of any New Zealand film, screening across 128 locations in New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, the Cook Islands, Fiji, and Samoa. The film's overwhelming reception has seen it become the third-biggest local opening in New Zealand’s history, following Hunt for the Wilderpeople and Sione’s 2: Unfinished Business.

Cinema owners and audiences alike have praised the film’s emotional depth and cultural significance. Many have reported repeat viewings, proving its lasting impact. Light House Cinema owner Simon Werry shared that audiences are absolutely loving Tina, while Ross Churchouse of Lido Hamilton noted that the film brings people together in an unforgettable way.

The success of Tina is a testament to the power of authentic storytelling, as highlighted by New Zealand Film Commission CEO Annie Murray. She emphasized that films like Tinā demonstrate why investing in local stories and talent is so crucial, not just for the domestic market, but for international audiences as well.

Collaborate Management is proud to see Talia Pua shine in this remarkable film. Her performance, along with the exceptional storytelling and direction, showcases the strength of New Zealand’s acting talent and the importance of diverse narratives on screen. With its potential for international success, Tina is an inspiring milestone for the industry and for the actors who bring these stories to life.
