Chelsea Winter’s Guide to a Stress-Free, Joyful Christmas

This Christmas, Chelsea Winter is keeping it simple, joyful, and real.

When it comes to the holiday season, Chelsea Winter—award-winning cookbook author and former MasterChef New Zealand winner—believes in trading the stress of perfection for moments of joy. This year, she’s leaving behind the hustle of professional kitchens to spend Christmas with her family at their bach on Aotea Great Barrier Island.

“It’s going to be slower and more relaxed,” Chelsea shares. “We’ll raid the veggie patch, go for walks, and enjoy some body surfing. It’s all about unwinding and soaking in the simple moments.”

Letting Go of Holiday Perfection

Fresh off a sell-out tour for her latest cookbook, Tasty, Chelsea knows how chaotic life can get, especially during the holidays. But she’s made peace with imperfections.

“Christmas doesn’t need to be perfect,” she says. “The world keeps spinning even if the pavlova cracks or the gravy isn’t silky smooth. What matters is the magic of being together and enjoying the company of loved ones.”

As a single mum, Chelsea juggles her boys, Sky (5) and Sage (2), with ease and humour. While Sky is eager to help in the kitchen—he’s even mastering his own eggs—little Sage prefers to do his own thing. “It’s a little chaotic, but I wouldn’t have it any other way,” Chelsea laughs.

Traditions That Keep It Fun and Stress-Free

Chelsea has never hosted Christmas, and she’s fine with that. “It’s always a bring-a-plate affair,” she says. “One person shouldn’t carry the whole burden of the meal.” Last year, her plant-based meatballs were a hit, even with the non-vegans.

The family also plays a “present game,” where each person brings a mystery gift to swap or steal—a tradition that takes the pressure off buying for everyone.

Balance in Food and Life

Known for her delicious, approachable recipes, Chelsea has shifted her focus to balance. Her latest cookbook features refined sugar-free recipes designed to avoid holiday sugar crashes.

“It’s all about keeping things gentle and even,” she says. “And it works—everyone feels better for it.”

Chelsea has also cut back on alcohol, a change she embraces for its clarity and balance. “I feel more present and have more energy to enjoy the holidays.”

Staying Centred with Mindful Practices

For Chelsea, starting the day with meditation and beach walks helps her stay grounded. “I set my alarm for 5:30 am to meditate, and I walk the beach five days a week,” she says. “These routines give me the capacity to handle anything the holidays throw my way.”

A Heart Full of Gratitude

When reflecting on the holidays, Chelsea cherishes the wisdom that comes with age and the love she shares with her family. “It’s not always easy, but the joy and laughter make it all worthwhile.”

This Christmas, Chelsea is a reminder to us all: slow down, embrace imperfection, and savour the little moments that truly matter.
