She / Her
Alice Pearce is a New Zealand-based children’s book author known for her lively storytelling that resonates with young readers. Her debut book, Ruby Loud Mouse and the Ruru, published by Bateman Books, showcases her playful writing style and ability to engage children with relatable characters. The story revolves around Ruby, a mouse who struggles with being quiet, only to find that her loudness can be a powerful asset when her village is threatened by a ruru (a native owl). Aimed at children aged 3 to 7, this picture book has become popular for its humorous approach to the challenges children face in navigating societal expectations of behavior.
The story has also been recognized in the New Zealand arts community, being shortlisted for the Storylines Joy Cowley Award in 2021. Alice Pearce's ability to blend New Zealand cultural elements with universal childhood experiences makes her books appealing to both local and international audiences. Her energetic narrative voice and creative flair promise to leave a lasting impact on the realm of children's literature in Aotearoa.
In addition to her work as a children's author, Pearce has a varied background in performance and creative arts. Her love of storytelling extends beyond writing into theatre and screen performance, reflecting her versatility and dynamic approach to creativity. She also writes for these performance spaces. Her first stage play, a solo show called Out of Order, has toured New Zealand and Australia, and she was recently selected for Playmarket NZ's Te Hono mentorship programme to develop her latest play script, A Kind of Fury. Further writing credits include Basket - a short film currently in post production, and Dicing with Death, another short film released earlier this year.
